“Absolute rubbish” – Donaghy pours cold water on the Roscommon rumours

Niall McIntyre

Kieran Donaghy has distanced himself from rumours linking him with the vacant Roscommon job.

The rumour mill was in full-flow on Monday evening, and it was reported that Donaghy was set to leave his post as Armagh selector to take over the Roscommon senior footballers.

But the Star, who still plays for his club Austin Stacks, poured cold water on the rumours soon after.

“Absolute rubbish,” he said.

“I did not speak to one single person associated with Roscommon GAA.

“What has happened to fact checking a story these days.

“WhatsApp rumours are a scary thing.”

The news will come as a huge boost to Kieran McGeeney and the Armagh footballers, who made big strides this year in what was Donaghy’s first full season involved. He worked with the team as a coach this year, and Kieran McGeeney had previously explained the reason he went after him.

“The reason I went after Kieran was Kieran made a career out of bringing other people into the game and I just think that’s something we were still missing in Armagh,” said Geezer back in 2021.

“It’s sometimes hard to explain to people. Sometimes, I think you can have too many good forwards.

“You need people to make them tick, a bit like Ciaran Kilkenny does for Dublin, like Kieran would have done for Kerry, things like that. I just thought Kieran would have that type of background in his basketball too.”
