About time! Ladies football and camogie to set up their own GPA

The new association is to be launched in mid-January

Why hasn’t this happened before now?

Frankly it’s hard to believe that the women who play camogie and ladies football at inter-county level in this country haven’t had their own playing union but that’s all about to change.

It’s been announced by the GPA, which represents men playing football and hurling at the elite level, that at a new association for female inter-county players will be launched in 2015.

The body will linked to its big brother but will be very much a separate entity.

Female inter-county stars get very few if any of the same benefits or treatment that their male colleagues enjoy for playing at the highest level.

Aoife Lane of Waterford IT is to be the new chairperson while top players such as Cork’s Valerie Mulcahy and Wexford’s Kate Kelly are understood to also have been crucial to the formation of the association.

The official launch is set to take place on January 20th.
