20×20 to take centre stage during Dublin and Mayo game

Jack O'Toole

35 ladies footballers from Whitehall Colmcille GAA club will proudly bring the 20×20 flag onto the pitch at Croke Park before Saturday’s All-Ireland semi-final between Dublin and Mayo.

The 20×20 campaign is an initiative that seeks to change the subliminal bias in the Irish psyche that exists around girls and boys, or women and men, when it comes to sport and it will serve as the focal point for Saturday’s pre-match ceremony.

The ladies footballers will bring the flag on to the pitch after President Michael D. Higgins has greeted both sets of teams and the large flag will be shown to what should be a capacity crowd of 82,00 at Croke Park.

20×20 calls on all fans to Show Your Stripes and Go See For Yourself – by pledging to see more women’s sporting events over the next 18 months.

The movement’s slogan is ‘If She Can’t See It, She Can’t Be It’ and the campaign’s aim is to increase media coverage of women in sport, female participation, and attendance at women’s games and events – all by 20% by 2020.

Earlier this summer the campaign launched Ireland’s first ever Women in Sport Calendar listing fixtures online across a wide range of sports to make it easier to find what’s on and where.

Some of the big events coming up in Irish female sport includes the All-Ireland Senior and Intermediate Championship Camogie semi- finals on August 17th, the TG4 Ladies Football Senior Championship semi-finals on August 24th and the Women’s Interpros ; Munster Women v Leinster Women on August 31st at Irish Independent Park in Cork.
