Could Sebastian Vettel replace Sergio Perez at Red Bull? Helmut Marko weighs in

Helmut Marko has revealed that Sebastian Vettel has “repeatedly enquired” about making a return to Formula 1 with Red Bull.

Although speculation around a return has continued, with Audi as a potential option given their search for a German driver, the team ultimately chose Nico Hulkenberg.

Additionally, Audi’s entry into F1 isn’t scheduled until 2026, which likely influenced Vettel’s decisions.

In an interview with Formel1.de, Marko confirmed that Vettel expressed interest in rejoining Red Bull, specifically to replace Sergio Perez.

“Vettel has repeatedly enquired with us, but I don’t think it would be pleasant for him to drive next to Max Verstappen,” Marko said.

“If I’m correctly informed, he seems to be moving towards Porsche and long-distance racing. I think that would be a very nice step for him.”

Despite Vettel’s interest, Red Bull is expected to retain Perez, with reports suggesting that a new deal could be announced within weeks.

Perez, who joined Red Bull in 2021, has been a reliable support driver for Verstappen.

However, Red Bull faces increasing competition from McLaren and Ferrari, whose form has improved significantly in early 2024. Perez’s recent DNF at the Monaco Grand Prix dropped him to fifth in the drivers’ championship.

Since his retirement, Vettel has remained visible in the F1 paddock, most recently attending the Imola Grand Prix to lead the Ayrton Senna tributes.

Speaking to media at Imola, Vettel discussed his satisfaction with his retirement decision. He told crash.net: “I miss great parts of it… But I don’t wake up in the mornings missing those moments on the podium when people shout your name.

“I think I’m quite realistic about life and trying to take on new challenges. I’m content and there are a lot of things that I miss, but a lot of things that I don’t miss.

“It was a tough call when I made it but, yeah, I was thinking about coming back and I know beforehand that I would. But in the end, nothing has changed so I’m still very happy with my decision.”

While Vettel’s F1 return with Red Bull seems unlikely, his potential move to Porsche and long-distance racing appears to be a fitting new chapter in his illustrious career.
