Irish defender signs four-year contract with Manchester City

Great to see

Robert Redmond

Good luck to Tyreke Wilson.

The 16-year-old defender from Dublin has just signed a professional contract with Manchester City. Wilson joined the Premier League side’s academy three years ago from Ballyfermot schoolboy side Cherry Orchard, where he played since he was eight-years-old.

City have a history of developing Irish players. Glenn Whelan, Stephen Ireland and Willo Flood all came through the academy, and in recent years Jack Byrne and goalkeeper Ian Lawlor made the trip from Irish schoolboy football to City’s academy before signing a professional deal.

The Premier League club linked up with Cherry Orchard to form a scouting network back in 2007, and it appears the relationship is still going strong.

Wilson is a left-footed defender, who has represented the Republic of Ireland at U-17 level, and his progress is definitely worth keeping an eye on over the next few years.
