Manchester United will have to spend big on Willian as Chelsea reject Barca bid

There’s a growing feeling that Willian will be leaving Chelsea this summer

The Brazilian, currently at the World Cup with his national side, has already been linked with a move away from Stamford Bridge with Manchester United repeatedly mentioned as his most likely destination.

Jose Mourinho, who signed the player from Anzhi Makhachkala during his second stint as Chelsea boss, is once again said to be interested in signing the forward, with the Express reporting a bid from Old Trafford may be imminent. United, however, aren’t the only club thought to be interested in signing the 29-year-old.

Not only are Barcelona reportedly sniffing around, the Daily Mail claim the Spanish champions have even tabled an opening bid for the player – thought to be around £50m.

Willian is a target for Manchester United

The report claims Barca, despite completing a league and cup double, have concerns over the depth of quality in their current squad and see Willian as a player who could add a different dimension to the club’s attack following the departure of Andres Iniesta.

Willian’s representatives have been in Barcelona recently and the Mail add that the lure of a move to Spain would be attractive for the player, who would also be able to link up with compatriots Philippe Coutinho and Paulinho.

For now, however, Willian will be staying put as Chelsea are said to have rejected the bid. It remains to be seen if they make an improved offer, although United are thought to be willing to bid more than £50m to secure the player’s services in time for the new season.

Chelsea finished last season fifth in the Premier League and are thought to be looking to bring in CSKA Moscow’s Russian international Aleksandr Golovin and Christian Pulisic, the Borussia Dortmund and USA forward. Should they be successful with either of these deals, Willian is likely to leave.
