Wayne Rooney is finally tweeting as himself again – and replying to smartarse fans like the old days

It's great having him back

Wayne, we’ve missed you @.

Who can forget the glory days of Wayne Rooney composing all his own tweets. Sure we all took the piss at the time, but in hindsight, that brief window of genuine posts from the man himself was a halcyon period of typos, tantrums, and pure honesty.

Alas tweets asking the ether whether Rio wanted picking up in the morning, lamenting that he wanted to run to Whitney (@), threatening to put himself to sleep ‘u little girl’, and telling Piers Morgan to ‘shut up u egg’, were replaced with this sort of corporate ghost-written fare…

But finally, the social media maverick is back. Rather unexpectedly, following Manchester United’s 2-1 defeat to Hull which qualified them for the EFL final over two legs, Wayne Rooney wrestled back control of his own account from his representation.

True to previous form, the tweet was genuine, mistyped, and endearing. Despite the disappointing result on the night, he was eager to show his appreciation for United’s travelling support…

Of course Twitter being Twitter, people were always going to mention the grammatically incorrect ‘was’ instead of ‘were’…

But when a rather rude individual questioned Wayne’s schooling and qualifications, the Manchester United captain couldn’t resist responding with a frank reply…

His legion of followers were just incredibly happy to have the main man back at the wheel…
