WATCH: Liverpool legend Sami Hyypiä is mobbed by Reds fans in Basel

He must have expected this

Simon Lloyd

It’s safe to say that Liverpool supporters have enjoyed their big day (so far at least).

With their side taking on Sevilla in Basel, tens of thousands of supporters arrived in the Swiss city ahead of tonight’s final.

As we’ve seen throughout the day, there are a good deal more Liverpool fans that have made the trip than there are seats for them in the St Jakob-Park stadium tonight.

Fans congregating in the city’s squares and streets were also joined by a familiar face, as former defender Sami Hyypiä made an unexpected appearance.

As you might expect, the ex-Finland international was given quite a welcome by the extremely vocal supporters.

Hyypiä was a player the last time that Liverpool reached a European final – some game in Istanbul 11 years ago (you might have heard Liverpool supporters mention it).

No matter which way the result goes, you can guarantee a few sore heads by the time tomorrow morning comes around.
