The American leg of Manchester United’s preseason tour ended in defeat on Wednesday night.

Victories over LA Galaxy, Real Salt Lake and Manchester City had been followed by a shootout triumph over Real Madrid for Jose Mourinho’s side, but a Neymar goal was enough for Barcelona to claim victory in Washington DC.

Both teams had fielded strong starting XIs for the match, with Barca’s front three of Lionel Messi, Luis Surez and Neymar all present.

The goal from the Brazilian came just after the half hour mark. Antonio Valencia appeared well placed to deal with Messi’s ball into the United box, but appeared to lose his footing as he attempted to control it.

Neymar was alert to this and after a quick turn was able to steer the ball beyond David De Gea and into the far corner.

United will now return to Europe where they will face Valerenga in Oslo next week before a game with Sampdoria in Dublin. After this, they will contest the European Super Cup with Real Madrid in the Macedonian capital, Skopje.
