Rangers supporters don’t need anyone to tell them that their defeat in Luxembourg the other week was something of an embarrassment.
Leading 1-0 after the home leg of their Europa League qualifier against Progrès Niederkorn – a side that finished fourth in Luxembourg’s top flight last season – the Glasgow club lost the return 2-0 to the part-timers.
Clearly, this was a major shock, and a far from ideal way to start (what many expected to be) Pedro Caixinha’s first full season as manager.
As you might expect, the news delighted many of those with allegiances to Rangers’ Old Firm rivals, Celtic. Former Celtic striker Chris Sutton, a man that was never going to miss out on such an opportunity, was quick to make his feelings on the matter known via a tweet.
Nearly two weeks on, Sutton was given another opportunity to comment on the result when appearing as a pundit for BT Sport as they covered the Betfred Cup game between Queen’s Park and Motherwell at Hampden Park on Saturday.
Not for the first time in his punditry career, Sutton pulled no punches.
“It’s probably the worst result ever by a British club in European competition – that’s how bad it was,” he explained.
Returning to Caixinha’s decision to ban his players from wearing green coloured boots because of the colour’s association with Celtic, a theme he touched on in his initial tweet on the result, Sutton continued: “Do I have sympathy for Pedro Caixinha? No, I don’t… He does more of his talking off the pitch since he’s been in Scotland and I think that’s the problem.
“All the stuff about green boots. It would help Rangers if they actually put their boots on the right feet.”
