Virgil van Dijk managed to annoy Manchester City’s players with his reaction to Mohamed Salah’s penalty in the Community Shield on Saturday.

Jurgen Klopp’s side secured a 3-1 victory over City in the annual season opener, which took place at Leicester City’s King Power Stadium. Liverpool opened the scoring through Trent Alexander-Arnold, but Julian Alvarez levelled proceedings in the 70th minute.

The Reds restored their advantage after Ruben Dias blocked Darwin Nunez’s header with his hand. Salah stepped up to take the spot-kick and smashed his strike past Ederson in the City goal.

As the Liverpool players ran off to celebrate with the Egyptian international, Ederson attempted to roll the ball back to the centre circle so his side could get the game restarted as quick as possible.

However, Van Dijk – who was on his way over to Salah and the rest of his teammates – had other ideas. The Dutchman booted the ball high into the stands, which annoyed the City players.

Rodri tries to confront Virgil Van Dijk

Rodri attempted to confront the 31-year-oldwhile Bernardo Silva appeared to argue with referee Craig Pawson about his conduct.

Liverpool grabbed a third goal in injury time as Nunez, who replaced Roberto Firmino in the 59th minute, scored his first official goal for the Reds.

The Uruguayan striker impressed after coming on the bench, but it was far from a successful evening for his City counterpart Erling Haaland, who missed a sitter toward the end of the clash.

With Nunez having opened his Liverpool account at the other end moments earlier, it looked for all the world that Haaland would get off the mark in the final minute of stoppage time. Phil Foden’s shot from outside the box was saved by the goalkeeper, falling kindly to him inside the six-yard box.

Somehow, he lofted the ball over, clipping the top of the crossbar on the way. The miss was met with deafening ironic cheers from the Liverpool supporters at the other end of the King Power Stadium.
