“That’s Better!” Andy Townsend heading towards the ITV exit door

ITV 's Champions League loss looks like being the end for Townsend

With ITV’s Champions League coverage set to expire at the end of the season, it appears that Mr Tactics Truck himself, Andy Townsend, is getting “mutual consented” by the station.

BT Sport will be taking exclusive coverage of the Champions League in the UK as of the 2015/16 season, and it appears that Townsend is now going to be surplus to requirements at ITV, despite the station still having rights for England internationals, and the expected bidding war with the BBC for Premier League highlights in the spring.

The Daily Mail say that Townsend and presenter Andy Smith will both be leaving the station at the end of the season, but that Townsend won’t be sitting on the scratcher for too long, reporting that he “has offers from other international broadcasters.”

Most likely, that means he’s heading stateside or to the Middle-East, but one can only hope RTE bring out the chequebook to reunite the greatest broadcasting team in Irish history; that’s right, we’re starting the campaign to get France 98’s sensational Niall Quinn and Andy Townsend phone-in show back on the air.
