“If it’s a scrappy game, I’ll get stuck in” – Luca Connell ready for action

Niall McIntyre

Luca Connell has signed for Celtic with a signal of intent.

He’s only 18 years of age yet the Republic of Ireland midfielder has lots of experience and he knows what he wants.

“10-in-a-row,” he replies when asked what his main aim is here.

Meet a youngster with plenty of ambition. Having just broken onto Bolton’s first team last January, Connell – the player born in England and made in Ireland – went onto make 12 senior appearances for the club he’s been with since he was nine years of age.

And though Bolton were struggling, Connell impressed. It wasn’t the first time.

Between that and his exploits with the Ireland 17s, 18s and 19s over the last few years, he’s turned plenty of heads, Mick McCarthy’s chief among them and with the Ireland senior manager spotting his potential, he called him into the senior squad just last month.

Saturday morning’s move completes a huge month for the teenager. Neil Lennon was another impressed by what he’d seen and Connell put pen to paper on a four year deal with the club this morning.

He was interviewed upon arrival and with that thick Liverpool accent, he laid on the line what he will bring to the table and what his dreams here.

“I like the get on the ball and pass, but if it’s a scrappy game, I’ll get stuck in. Left footed, left sided midfield but I can fill in left back either, I don’t mind.”

“I’m looking forward to all the league games but especially for the Champions League. I can’t wait to get started, I believe in myself and I believe that I can help my teammates go on and make more history, I’m more than ready”
