Reports: Manchester United to buy striker, ditch defender before transfer window closes

One out, one in

Jose Mourinho said he wanted four players in before the season started. He wouldn’t say no to an extra striker though.

Manchester United have laid out more than £145m on summer transfers but there may be movement yet before the window closes at the end of this month.

Wayne Rooney and Zlatan Ibrahimovic both scored at the weekend, Anthony Martial had two assists and Marcus Rashford was in reserve. Still, Mourinho is reportedly keen on bringing in Brazilian striker Gabriel Barbosa.

‘Gabigol’ is currently playing for his country at Rio 2016 and has been linked with Inter Milan and Juventus. Those sides have, respectively, offered €25 and €20m but United, according to The Sun, are willing to blow that out of the water with a €34.5m bid.

Matteo Darmian is being heavily linked, this morning, with a return to Italy after starting the season behind Antonio Valencia in the right-back pecking order. Darmian was signed by United, from Torino, for £12.7m and started well under Louis van Gaal before suffering a dip in form.

He was having a good Euro 2016 with Italy until he missed in the quarter final shootout against Germany. Darmian would have hoped to be United’s starting right-back but Mourinho has opted for the reinvigorated Valencia.

Various outlets have reported that United are open to offers for Darmian, with Sky Sports going so far as to name Napoli and Lazio as interested suitors.
