Premier League’s random fixture generator has randomly screwed Liverpool

The machines are taking over

Patrick McCarry

Thanks for nothing technology.

Thousands dispute it but the Premier League insist all of their Premier League fixtures are fairly, and randomly, selected.

Sure, a programme may instruct the fixture generator not to put, say, West Brom on the road for two months straight but the process is supposed to be equitable enough.

Tell that to Liverpool fans, however.

Jurgen Klopp’s men have been give a teak tough start to 2016/17. They travel away to Arsenal for their opening fixture before newly-promoted Burnley provide light relief, at Anfield.

What follows should define Liverpool’s league campaign. They travel to London to play Tottenham on August 27. Up next is Premier League champions Leicester City and Anfield [September 10] and a trip to Stamford Bridge to take on Antonio Conte’s Chelsea.

Manchester United come to Anfield on October 15 and they play the return fixture at Old Trafford on January 14. Their league run-in is handy enough, in terms of meeting sides that finished high in 2015/16.

Many fans were not too enamoured with Liverpool’s opening fixtures of the new season:
