“We’ve played there, we’ve been there. We know how tough this period is.”

Peter Schmeichel stunned Jamie Carragher with his Champions League final prediction on Tuesday evening.

The former Manchester United goalkeeper, appearing on punditry duty for CBS, claimed that Liverpool and Manchester City will both miss out on the final as he believes it is so difficult to compete in multiple competitions at this stage of the season.

Carragher found Schmeichel’s Champions League prediction dumbfounding.

Peter Schmeichel prediction shocks Jamie Carragher.

When previewing the quarter-finals, Schmeichel predicted that Liverpool, Bayern Munich, Real Madrid and Man City would advance to the last four.

The Dane then said that he believed both City and Liverpool would lose in the semi-finals, and it would be a Bayern v Real Madrid final in Paris on May 28.

Carragher, who was on punditry duty with Schmeichel, was dumbfounded by his colleague’s prediction.

The former Liverpool defender could not understand how the pundit could rule both Liverpool and Man City out of the running to win the tournament, as they are such excellent teams.

Schmeichel, however, believes that the two sides, who are in a Premier League title race and the FA Cup semi-finals, will find it difficult to compete on multiple fronts.

Schmeichel explains his Champions League final call.

“Oh behave. Honest to god. What are you talking about?” Carragher’s said on CBS Sports when Schmeichel backed Bayern over Liverpool in a hypothetical semi-final.

Schmeichel justified his prediction by his referencing the demanding nature Premier League title race in comparison to the runaway leads Real and Bayern have amassed in their respective leagues.

The ex-Man United goalkeeper, who won the Champions League in 1999, said that Bayern and Madrid can rest their players for the domestic matches, whereas the English clubs aren’t afforded the same luxury.

“Too much is going on between Man City and Liverpool,” Schmeichel responded.

“Too much pressure. Real Madrid and Bayern are so far ahead in their leagues. They can rest players and prepare for this. Man City and Liverpool can’t.

“We know, we’ve played there, we’ve been there. We know how tough this period is.

“One little thing goes wrong and everything tumbles down. Bayern to win the Champions League this year.”

Later in the night, Liverpool won 3-1 away to Benfica to put one foot in the semi-finals, and Man City beat Atletico Madrid 1-0. In the other quarter-finals, Chelsea play Real Madrid and Bayern Munich take on Villarreal.
