Not every member of Leicester City’s squad is guaranteed a Premier League winner’s medal

Not enough games

Tom Victor

At the end of last season, when Chelsea won the Premier League, Jose Mourinho requested extra medals for players who had not met the five-game minimum.

The league only guarantees medals for members of title-winning squads who have taken to the field five or more times (it used to be 10), but Mourinho ensured the likes of Lewis Baker and Mark Schwarzer were not left out.

And now Schwarzer, fresh from becoming the first ever player to be involved in back-to-back title winning squads in the Premier League era, may need his new boss to follow Mourinho’s lead.

As the Daily Mirror reports, Schwarzer is one of six squad members not automatically in line for a medal despite featuring in multiple matchday squads for the Foxes.

Kasper Schmeichel has played every single minute of the season so far, meaning both Schwarzer and fellow backup goalkeeper Ben Hamer have spent the campaign looking on from the sidelines.

Defenders Liam Moore and Ben Chilwell have also failed to notch a single league minute, though Chilwell featured in the FA Cup meetings with Tottenham, and Matty James is yet to play after missing most of the campaign with a knee injury.

The final player to miss out, centre-back Marcin Wasilewski, has at least made it onto the pitch this season. And seeing as his last action in a Leicester shirt was to concede the late free-kick from which Danny Welbeck headed in a dramatic winner from Arsenal, some will probably joke that the Pole has contributed more in his absence than others have by playing.

There are three further players not mentioned in the Mirror article who have featured for the Foxes this season.

Andrej Kramaric, Yohan Benalouane and Joe Dodoo have all made substitute appearances in the Premier League this season, but have since been loaned out to Hoffenheim, Fiorentina and Bury respectively.
