Mauricio Pochettino says Mbappé is as good as Messi and Ronaldo

“I have no doubts that Mbappé is at that level, that of Messi or Cristiano”

Mauricio Pochettino has claimed that Kylian Mbappé is on the same talent level as Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo.

The Frenchman quickly established himself as one of the world’s brightest prospects, impressing with Monaco before making the switch to rivals Paris Saint-Germain in 2017.

During his time at the Parc des Princes, the 22-year-old has scored 136 goals in 182 games, as well as registering 66 assists.

Mbappé also became the youngest player since Pele to score in a World Cup final as France won the trophy in 2018.

PSG manager Pochettino has now suggested that the forwards’s ability is on the same level as Messi and Ronaldo, who have won a host of trophies throughout their respective careers, as well as securing 11 Ballons d’Or between them.

Speaking to Radio Marca, the PSG boss revealed: “I have no doubts that Mbappé is at that level, that of Messi or Cristiano and that it is a fortune to have him here with Neymar and with Messi.

“It is a satisfaction to see him in each training session. It is clear that he is one of the great talents, he is present and future.”

Despite making a strong start to the current campaign – registering seven goal contributions in nine games for the Parisians – Mbappé’s future is up in the air.

The World Cup winner recently went on record expressing his desire to leave PSG and join Spanish giants Real Madrid, with a bid for the striker officially rejected in the summer, and reports also suggesting that Madrid made at least two more.

Pochettino was asked about the current situation with Mbappé, but he gave a somewhat cryptic response.

“Mbappé is fine. He is a calm boy, with a lot of personality and a very sociable character,” said the Argentine.

“He is clear about things and loves football. He is 22 years old, but has a very high maturity to manage these types of situations about his future.

“I have no doubt that Kylian can handle any challenge that comes his way in the future.”

Although the frontman’s contract expires at the end of this season, Pochettino seems optimistic about PSG’s chances of keeping hold of one of their star men.

He added: “I am left with the fact that the situation is open and in the future anything can happen.

“The position of a few months ago may change in the future… PSG as a club has the hope and the ability to seduce him and to offer him things so that he can stay and be happy.

“He has a contract until June 30, 2022 and the possibilities that he can change his mind are there.”

The Parisians are in action on Friday night (15 October) as they host Angers at the Parc des Princes.
