Matt Doherty Ireland argument strengthened with superb goal for Wolves

That turn was filthy

Matt Doherty

Matt Doherty has yet to receive an international cap from the Republic of Ireland.

He may warm the bench for Martin O’Neill, but at Wolverhampton Wanderers, they call Matt Doherty ‘the king.’

The 25-year-old was one of the key players in Wolves’ 2-0 Championship victory away to Reading on Saturday. He even bagged a beautiful team goal in the win against last season’s beaten play-off finalists to send his side to the top of the table.

A dazzling run from Helder Costa down the right wing kicked off the attack. The ball found its way to Doherty who played a quick one-two, timed a perfect run into the box, sold the defender a dummy turn before burying the ball into the net.

The former Bohemians youth player has been a regular starter for his club for the last four seasons and at 25 years of age, he has yet to reach his prime.

Although he togs out at right back for Wolves, he can play on the left too. His recent performances have had many wondering how he hasn’t managed to work his way into the Ireland team ahead of the likes of Cyrus Christie and Steven Ward.

Really, this debate has been going for a while.
