Marcus Rashford’s innocuous comments could be a solution to Wayne Rooney problem

Spoke to United's in-house magazine

What are they trying to suggest at ManUtd.com?

Marcus Rashford has forced his way into the Manchester United team for the second time this year and proved his spring-time goal glut was no fluke.

Having started the season on Jose Mourinho’s bench, Rashford claimed all three points for United with a late winner against Hull. He was an impressive sub, following a goal-scoring debut for England U21s, in the 2-1 loss to Manchester City. The Old Trafford crowd voiced their approval every time he bothered the City defence, and he did it several times.

That earned him starts against Feyenoord and Watford, with another goal coming at Vicarage Road.

Right now, Rashford is the only good news story at Manchester United.

It will come as no surprise, then, that he is subject to a feature interview in Inside United, the club’s in-house magazine. What is interesting is that the club’s official website has chosen to focus on Rashford’s willingness to play in the No.10 role.

Considering Wayne Rooney’s recent struggles in the position, and his unsuccessful switch to right-side of a midfield three, the timing of the release of such a topical subject are extremely convenient. Rashford played in the role for United’s U16s and says:

“I can still play there if I need to – no.10, on both wings and up front as well. It means I have more in my armoury when it comes to the matches.”

Naturally, the comments have been picked up by the press and online.

Former Arsenal striker Ian Wright pitched in

“Rashford has to start to be used up front. If he is stretching teams, then they can win the ball further up the pitch.”
