Manchester United ‘given hope’ of another transfer deal that probably won’t happen

Anthony Martial could be the key

Simon Lloyd

It’s early June, and you Manchester United fans have already had to wade through a fair amount of transfer gossip.

With Antoine Griezmann’s move to Old Trafford knocked squarely on the head (for a year, at least), much of the transfer news lately has been about Jose Mourinho’s attempts to secure a new striker. So far, this much-reported pursuit of a new goal machine has failed to bear fruit.

While you continue to wait for news on that front, you can at least waste a few seconds of your day reading about another player potentially (but probably not) moving to your club.

The player in question is said to be Tiemoue Bakayoko, the Monaco midfielder. Like most of the Ligue 1 club’s 2016/17 squad, Bakayoko is being linked with a move elsewhere this summer. So far, Chelsea appeared to be leading the race for the player who is believed to have held discussions with the champions.

However, according to the Manchester Evening News, Jose Mourinho is said to be sniffing around the 22-year-old – not literally, that’d just be weird – with a view to bringing him to Manchester. Despite Chelsea being strongly linked with him, the report claims that a move to London is yet to be agreed.

As well as this, it also points out that Bakayoko is close to United’s Anthony Martial, a man that is sure to have given glowing reports about spending the majority of his time under Mourinho on the bench, who the MEN suggest could be United’s ‘trump card’ in any deal for the midfielder.

Don’t hold your breath.
