Manchester United are considering introducing gender-neutral toilets at Old Trafford with the aim of making the matchday experience more “welcoming and inclusive” for fans.

The subject was brought up at a meeting of United’s fans’ forum last month and the club’s head of security Jim Liggett admitted that it was being discussed.

Should plans go ahead to introduce toilets which could be used by all fans, regardless of gender identity, United would be the first top-flight club to install such facilities.

“It’s something we are looking at as we are keen to ensure that Old Trafford continues to be welcoming and inclusive to all supporters; I will keep you posted regarding progress,” Liggett said, via Manchester Evening News.

“Our commitment to equality, diversity and inclusion is important in everything that we do and we’re constantly working with key stakeholders, including Stonewall, on such topics.”

As well as the possibility of putting gender-neutral toilets in place, United are also hoping to have a new security measure, which is designed to prevent potential attacks on the stadium by vehicles, finished before the turn of the year.

Liggett said: “There is a programme to install high-security hostile vehicle mitigation bollards at a number of points around the perimeter of the stadium; these works are scheduled for completion ahead of the New Year.”
