Manchester United fans can strike one name off their list of potential Old Trafford arrivals

Not the Breel thing

Simon Lloyd

Regardless of the fact that many of us are busy watching the Euros, it’s still that time of year where we’re up to our knees in transfer gossip.

As has been the case since Sir Alex Ferguson retired, Manchester United are widely expected to squander tens/hundreds of millions in the weeks ahead, overpaying for a series of distinctly average players.

But we can at least scratch one name off the ridiculously-long list of potential Old Trafford in-comings.

Swiss striker Breel Embolo is 19 years of age and played a part in his country’s Euro 2016 campaign. Some reports tipped the youngster to leave FC Basel once Switzerland’s involvement in the tournament was over.

Were United linked with him? Of course they bloody were. And although there were more reports linking Embolo with United, they weren’t the only ones said to be keeping tabs on him. Other reports had linked him with Arsenal and Barcelona.

Thanks to a wayward penalty from new Arsenal man Granit Xhaka, Switzerland *are* now out of the Euros and sure enough, young Breel *is* on the move. But not to United.

Instead of boarding a plane to Manchester (or London or Barcelona), the highly-rated striker will be plying his trade in the Bundesliga next season with Schalke. Less than 24-hours after Poland’s penalty shoot-out win, it was announced that he’d signed a 5-year contract – proving once again that we should never trust a transfer rumour until it’s a done deal.

All that remains now is for a few ‘Jose Mourinho misses out on transfer target’ headlines, even though he probably wasn’t interested anyway…
