Manchester City change their Twitter name for International Women’s Day

Fair play.

Every year since 1908, International Women’s Day has been celebrated on March 8. The milestone date came into existence on the back of a trade union movement in America in the early 20th century.

During this period, working conditions for women left a lot to be desired. In 1907 a “Hunger March” protest was organised to stand up for women’s rights. The march was attacked by police, but one year later, on March 8 1908, a commemorative march was held. This is what we now celebrate as International Women’s Day.

A host of events, campaigns and movements are took place all over the world on Thursday to mark the occasion.

Aer Lingus, for example, offered free priority boarding to all of their female passengers departing on UK and European flights from Ireland on Thursday. Meanwhile popular hair salons were offering free hair dos and so on.

One of the most noteworthy strides was taken by English football club Manchester City, however. The runaway Premier League leaders changed their name on Twitter to Womanchester City for the day.

The club also shared a video composed of soundbites from some of their star players endorsing #PressforProgress.

Fair play to the club.
