Jose Mourinho sent to the Old Trafford stands again and his crime was petty enough

Very harsh punishment

Patrick McCarry

For the second time in three home games, Jose Mourinho has been sent to the stands.

The Manchester United boss had just witnessed his side erase an early deficit, through Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s header, when Paul Pogba was booked for a dive. The caution means the midfielder will miss United’s League Cup game against the same opposition – West Ham.

Pogba protested his innocence to referee John Moss and claimed he had been caught by Hammers midfielder Mark Noble. He was definitely not.

Mourinho felt so and he let his frustrations be known by launching an MUFC-branded water bottle into orbit.

Boiling point reached. Point made.

We’re not sure if Mourinho felt any better but his mood was about to worsen. After a word from the fourth official on the sidelines, Moss approached Mourinho and sent him to the stands. United assistant boss Rui Faria had to take over on the sidelines.

Moss, of course, was the same official that sent Mourinho to the stands last season when he took charge of Chelsea versus West Ham.

The latest trip to the stands comes less than a month after he was sent from the sidelines in United’s draw with Burnley at Old Trafford.

The punishment certainly appeared harsh for the victimless crime.

It might look bad to viewers at home but in the list of Mourinho’s footballing misdemeanours, this is way down there.
