Man United fans fear John Terry is set to become their new assistant manager

It might seem unlikely, but Mourinho's latest comments have caused some to think it might be possible

Let’s make this clear: John Terry will not be the next Manchester United assistant manager.

Despite playing a significant role in winning the Old Trafford club their third European Cup a decade ago, Terry was the figurehead of a Chelsea side which, for a few years, were United’s main Premier League rivals.

Nope. The idea that he could suddenly forget all about all that and decide to become part of United’s coaching staff is an utterly ridiculous one. Or at least that’s what most of us might think…

Although we’re assuming most of the tweets featured below were tongue-in-cheek, Jose Mourinho’s latest comments about his soon to be revealed new assistant have got people thinking that – as ridiculously unlikely as it may seem – it might be a possibility.

Speaking to Record, the Portuguese publication, Mourinho clarified that following Rui Faria’s departure, he would be appointing someone who was not Portuguese as his new number two. He also added the individual could not be named for the time being as they are currently attached to another club.

“It’s a person coming who worked with me before but I can’t say the name because he’s still linked to another club,” he said.

Many were quick to point out that former England captain Terry, who has helped steer Aston Villa to a Championship play-off final, meets the criteria.

It was announced last week that Faria, who has worked alongside Mourinho for 17 years, was leaving Old Trafford to pursue new opportunities. Although the United boss appeared to initially rule out replacing him – saying that Michael Carrick’s move to the coaching staff would help fill the void – his latest comments appear to indicate he’s changed his mind on the matter.

United play their final game of the season at Wembley on Saturday afternoon, taking on Chelsea in the FA Cup final. We’re pretty sure Terry’s loyalties will still lie with his former club.
