Japanese goalkeeper scores injury-time header to keep promotion hopes alive

Norihiro Yamagishi's header saved his side from playoff elimination

Neil Treacy

As everyone knows, there’s never a shortage to the drama in the Japanese second division.

With Montedio Yamagata and Jubilo Iwata tied at 1-1 deep in injury-time of their J-League 2 semi-final, and the latter set to progress based on their better league position, Yamagata’s keeper Norihiro Yamagishi pegged it forward for a corner kick in search of a goal to keep his team’s promotion hopes alive.

And it proved to be an inspired decision, Yamagishi scoring a glancing header that any striker in the world would be proud of, to send the crowd into raptures and his side into the playoff final.

Dōmo arigatō, Mr Yamagishi.

And while we’re at it, let’s remind ourselves of the greatest goalkeeper goal of all time.

Step forward, Mr Jimmy Glass.
