Florentino Perez and a few Manchester United fans might disagree, but it appears somebody thinks Ed Woodward has been doing a good job.
An announcement from the club revealed that United’s chief executive has been elected to the new board of the European Club Association.
Now that United’s topsy-turvy transfer business has been put to bed for another four months, Woodward needs something to do with his Tuesdays.
Karl-Heinz Rummenigge of Bayern Munich has been re-appointed as ECA chairman, while Woodward takes his place on a board alongside United’s former goalkeeper, Edwin van der Sar – now a director at Ajax – and Real Madrid’s Pedro Lopez Jiminez.
According to United, the ECA is ‘an independent body which represents and promotes the interests of 220 European football clubs’.
Independently representing the best interests of 220 separate football clubs does not sound overly independent but for a completely unbiased view, here what Rummenigge has to say about his power-group.
‘ECA’s achievements since its inception in 2008 are remarkable and make all of us very proud. We are a well-respected association and are taken seriously at all levels.’
‘With the support of all member clubs, the newly-elected Executive Board will face the upcoming challenges with a lot of commitment to ensure that the clubs’ voice continues to be heard.’
Fair play to Ed, K-H and those plucky little clubs.
