Dimitri Payet has scored an incredible side-footed volley for Marseille

Simon Lloyd

He is at it again, ladies and gents.

Just when we thought Zlatan Ibrahimovic had comfortably claimed best goal of the weekend, along comes Dimitri Payet to make us doubt ourselves.

The Frenchman became known for popping up with the odd thunderbastard here and there during his 18-month stint with West Ham and did so again on Sunday night, smashing home Marseille’s second in their 4-0 win against Guingamp.

Already leading through Florian Thauvin’s opener, Marseille were pressing forward in search of a second with little under 20 minutes still to play.

A floated diagonal ball in the direction of Konstantinos Mitroglou appeared to have been dealt with by the Guingamp defence, headed away, toward’s the Marseille left wing.

Barely in the frame when the header is made, Payet darts forward at this point, meeting the ball before it bounces and unleashing a dipping volley – made all the more impressive given that he *side-foots* it – which the goalkeeper is powerless to prevent from entering his goal.

Here, have a watch and, like the rest of us, watch it several hundred more times on repeat.

Now 31, Payet has three goals to his name this season having scored twice in Marseille’s opening day victory over Toulouse.

He looked a certainty to be in the French World Cup squad in the summer but was ruled out after picking up an injury during the French club’s Europa League final defeat to Atletico Madrid last May. Already trailing to Atleti after half an hour, Payet strained his hamstring and was immediately forced to leave the field, spelling the end of his hopes of making it to Russia.
