Aaron Wan-Bissaka has Champions League ban extended

A day after Kevin De Bruyne escaped a red for a near-identical challenge, Wan-Bissaka has his ban extended

Manchester United defender Aaron Wan-Bissaka has had his Champions League suspension extended by UEFA following his red card dismissal against Young Boys earlier this month.

Wan-Bissaka was shown a straight red for a first half challenge against the Swiss side, which ruled him out of last night's European game, at home to Villarreal.

It's now been announced that the right-back's ban has been extended by a an extra game by UEFA's disciplinary panel. The mandatory one-game ban has been increased on the grounds of "rough play", which rules him out of the home game with Serie A side, Atalanta.

Wan-Bissaka's dismissal in Switzerland came ten minutes from half-time, with United leading through Cristiano Ronaldo's opener.

United went on to lose the game 2-1, after a horrendous misplaced back pass from Jesse Lingard allowed their hosts to score a winner with the last kick of the game.

Wan-Bissaka's longer-than-anticipated absence in Europe adds to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's defensive concerns. The weekend defeat to Aston Villa saw Luke Shaw and Harry Maguire limp off with injury, meaning United will be forced to field a weakened defence against their Europa League conquerers on Wednesday night.

News of Wan-Bissaka's extended ban comes with 24 hours after Kevin De Bruyne escaped a red card for a similar challenge in Manchester City's 2-0 defeat to Paris Saint-Germain on Tuesday.
