Michael Conlan will appear on the Late Late Show tonight.
The Belfast boxer missed out on his chance at Olympic gold because of a terrible scoring decision at the Rio Games, and was understandably furious after the bout against Russia’s Vladimir Nikitin.
Conlan was crestfallen following the defeat, vowing never to fight amateur again and labelled AIBA “cheats” as his dreams of Olympic gold died.
Possibly the only positive story out of the whole affair was a letter Conlan received from a five-year-old fan.
Finn McManus offered the boxer a medal he won in school as a consolation for missing out on a second Olympic medal.
Finn’s letter to Conlan read:
“Hi Michael, My name is Finn McManus and I am five years old. I saw your fight in Rio and you should have won because you are the best boxer in the world. I want you to have my school medal because you are a winner. I hope you like it, from Finn.”
Conlan will return the favour to his young fan on RTE this evening. The Belfast boxer will appear on the Late Late Show, where it appears he’ll present Finn with a pair of boxing gloves.
Even Putin and his pals couldn’t put a price on a gift like this.

The Belfast boxer did not wait for the show to begin out at Montrose to present Finn with his gift – the young slugger getting to try on the gloves (and meet his hero) before the broadcast
