Rob Heffernan will finally be awarded his medal from 2010 European Championships

We know they're walking but even this seems slow

Four years is a hell of a long time to wait for anything.

Well that’s exactly how long Cork race walker Rob Heffernan has had to wait for his bronze medal.

Heffernan put in a stellar performance in the 50km race at the 2010 European Championships but finished just shy of the medal places in 4th.

But after Russia’s Stanislav Emelyanov was slapped wit a drugs ban, the reigning 50km world champion was retrospectively awarded the bronze medal of which he was wrongly deprived in Barcelona four years ago.

Heffernan will be presented with the medal in Cork City Hall at 6pm tomorrow evening by none other than Sonia O’Sullivan.

“It’s mind-blowing,” Heffernan said. “It justifies my whole career.”
