PSG boss Christophe Galtier held back from fighting Marseille fans

The PSG boss was targeted during their 3-0 win.

Paris Saint-Germain boss Christophe Galtier had to be held back by his coaching staff to stop him from fighting with Marseille fans.

PSG secured a statement win in a top of the table clash in Ligue 1 to ease the pressure on Galtier following the French side’s poor form since the World Cup.

Kylian Mbappé scored twice – equalling Edison Cavani’s record of 200 to become PSG’s joint all-time goalscorer – and set up Lionel Messi, who fired home his 700th career league goal.

But the game was marred by the incident with Galtier and the home supporters at the Orange Vélodrome.

Galtier looked clearly incensed by something someone in the crowd said, prompting him to march forward and shout back.

Both parties then tried to move towards each other before Galtier was held back by his backroom staff before being taken away.

Although he didn’t acknowledge the incident during his post-match interview, the former Lille boss called on his side to use their win against Marseille as a platform for the rest of the season.

“The way the team played gave us a sense of relief. If we can play like this at Marseille’s Velodrome, we can play like this everywhere,” he said.

It was a much-needed win for Galtier after a poor run of form led to speculation about his future at the Parc des Princes.

Last week it was reported that PSG may make a move to bring Thomas Tuchel back to the club but any rumours of a managerial change have been shut down by the club’s president, Nasser Al-Khelaifi.

He said: “I am very happy, we played a great match tonight, a great PSG. I have always had confidence in my players and my coach. We really played a great match.”
