Coleman showed the leadership Everton will need to avoid relegation.

Seamus Coleman was praised for his leadership during Everton’s 2-0 loss to Liverpool in the Merseyside derby on Sunday.

The Everton captain also appeared to castigate his teammate Jordan Pickford for checking on Jordan Henderson after Richarlison fouled the Reds midfielder.

Frank Lampard’s side fell into the Premier League relegation zone after Burnely beat Wolverhampton Wanderers earlier in the day, and they set out to frustrate Liverpool throughout an often bad-tempered encounter at Anfield.

Everton’s efforts to thwart Jurgen Klopp’s team were successful for just over an hour. Anthony Gordon, in particular, caused Liverpool problems on the break and was Everton’s main attacking outlet as Lampard’s side looked to disrupt the home team and play on the counterattack.

On one occasion in the second half, Gordon broke up the Anfield pitch and ran around 60 yards with the ball before he was fouled by Trent Alexander-Arnold.

The England full-back was booked for the challenge and Gordon, 21, lay on the ground before Coleman came over to his teammate.

The Everton and Ireland captain repeatedly pointed at the badge on Gordon’s jersey and appeared to praise him for his effort.

Later in the game, Coleman took issue with Pickford after the England goalkeeper checked on the condition of his international teammate Henderson, who was laying on the ground after Richarlison fouled him.

Everton, however, couldn’t see out the game and record a potentially priceless point. Andy Robertson scored after 62-minutes as Liverpool broke the deadlock. The Toffees, who had just 16 per cent possession in the match, couldn’t find an equaliser and never came close to scoring.

Liverpool substitute Divock Origi scored his sixth goal against Everton late in the game to secure the three points and ensure that the home side remained only a point behind Manchester City at the top of the table.

Everton, meanwhile, are in the relegation zone, two points behind Burnley with a game in hand.

The Toffees host Chelsea at Goodison Park next weekend, while Burnley play Watford.
