England are through to the quarter-finals of the World Cup, where they will play Sweden, after beating Colombia on penalties
Here’s how we rated the England players:
Jordan Pickford – 7.5
The Everton goalkeeper wasn’t tested at all until stoppage time, when he pulled out a stunning save. He had another brilliant save during the shootout.
Kyle Walker – 6
Playing again as the right sided-central defender, Walker won his fair share of aerial challenges and helped snuff out one or two Colombian breaks with his recovery pace. His mistake 10 minutes from time almost cost England a goal, and he faded badly in extra-time.
John Stones – 7
Stones didn’t misplace a single pass in the first-half and often started moves for England passing into midfield. Radamel Falcao ran riot against Stones last year when Monaco played Manchester City in the Champions League. The England defender had a much more comfortable night in Moscow on Tuesday, until the match went to extra-time and England looked rattled.
Harry Maguire – 7.5
He stood up well to the physical challenge posed by the South Americans and went on a couple of his trademark runs from the back with the ball. A threat from set-pieces.
Kieran Trippier – 7.5
The Tottenham full-back has been England’s best player at the tournament so far, and he was, yet again, a dangerous attacking outlet down the right. He hugged the touchline and provided much-needed width as space became difficult to find. One of his pinpoint crosses almost led to a goal from Kane’s effort, and his deliveries were excellent all night. He created a brilliant chance for Alli in the second-half that his Spurs teammate failed to convert. Trippier was solid defensively, even if he probably could have prevented Mina’s late goal.
Ashley Young – 6.5
A solid performance, but he was rarely tested as Colombia chose to check back inside and rarely attempted to dribble by the converted winger. Some of his deliveries from dead balls were dangerous.
Jesse Lingard – 6
As always, his movement was sharp and he was neat in possession. He drifted to the edges of the game in the second-half when the match descended into a serious of tit for tat fouls by both sides.
Jordan Henderson – 6.5
The Liverpool captain was like England’s designated driver, the sole defensively minded midfielder on the pitch tasked with being responsible as he mates had fun and galavanted forward. He kept it simple when in possession and was rarely called upon to break-up any Colombian counter-attacks as the South Americans failed to pose England much of a threat. As always, he worked extremely hard and covered a lot of ground.
Dele Alli – 6
He looked off the pace in the first-half, which wasn’t too surprising considering that he missed the matches against Panama and Belgium with a thigh injury. Alli misplaced a couple of passes and was pushed off the ball quite a few times. Improved slightly after the break.
Raheem Sterling – 7
England’s brightest player in the first-half, Sterling was much improved from his displays against Tunisia and Panama. He dropped deep to collect the ball at times and was also a threat running beyond the Colombian defence. His link-up play was good and he also coped with the physical challenge from the Colombian defenders.
Harry Kane – 7.5
The England captain played on the margins against Tunisia and Panama. He scored five goals in those games, but was rarely involved in open play. That changed against Colombia. Kane dropped deep and tried to link-up play, with space hard to come by in the penalty area. He kept his cool to score his sixth goal of the tournament from the penalty spot and help send England to the last-eight of the tournament.

Looked off the pace when he came on.
Jamie Vardy – 6
Posed Colombia a threat with his pace and runs in behind.
Danny Rose – 6
Almost scored with an effort in the second-half of extra-time.
