Irish rider Dan Martin had been tipped to take stage eight of the Tour de France atop the Mur de Bretagne but despite a strong sprint finish, he was just pipped at the line by France's Alexis Vuillermoz.
Martin finished five seconds behind the stage winner, while Chris Froome finished eighth, to leave him 12 seconds behind Peter Sagan in the overall race for the Yellow Jersey.
