Want to try something new?

Are you becoming bored with your five-a-side football? Maybe you’re losing interest in GAA since they asked you to swear off alcohol until your 45th birthday.

Well, a change is as good as a rest. So, with the brand new Topaz Cash for Clubs initiative set to reward clubs all over the country with funding, it seemed like a good time to find out what alternatives were out there.

1. Dublin Dodgeball

“If you can dodge a wrench, you can dodge a ball.” We all know the film Dodgeball so why not give the sport a go. In case you’re still wondering what dodgeball is, the clue is in the name. It’s a team sport that revolves around trying to hit each other with balls. What’s not to love?

2. Dublin Capoeira

Capoeira is a Brazilian martial art that combines elements of fighting and acrobatic movement. If you’ve ever played Tekken, you’ll probably remember playing as Eddy and wrecking your opponent’s head with his unique fighting style. That’s Capoeira. So why not give it a go in real life and see whether you can master a move or two?

3. Phoenix Kayak Club

This Cork Kayak Club offers members the chance to do all sorts of kayaking but one of the most interesting options has to be night kayaking. Have you ever wanted to take to the water under the stars and do some kayaking by moonlight? Well, now you can.

4. Fenor Road Bowling

Road bowling is an old Irish sport where participants hurl a metal ball down a country road while people bet on the outcome. The aim is to get to the finish line with the fewest throws possible. Although not killing any innocent spectators is probably a close second.

5. Greystones Mariners

The Greystones Mariners are the oldest baseball club in Ireland so it seems like an obvious place to go if you want to channel your inner Babe Ruth. If you’ve always enjoyed rounders but want to take it to the next level, this could be the game for you.

6. Irish Hang Gliding & Paragliding Association

This is the one for any wannabe high fliers out there. The club is for people who do hang gliding, paragliding, paramotoring and powered hang gliding. Although they don’t provide training directly, they can advise you where to go for training or instruction.

7. Bujinkan Ireland

Have you ever fancied yourself as a Samurai warrior? Well, this could be the club for you. They practise Bujinkan Budo Taijutsu, a classical Japanese martial art that teaches unarmed combat and traditional Japanese weapons. This is a chance to learn actual ninja skills. Let’s just hope you do better than this guy.

8. Awesome Walls

Going up the walls has never been as much fun. Based in Dublin and Cork, Awesome Walls offers a wide range of indoor climbing experiences that range from bouldering to indoor rock climbing. You’ll end up using muscles you didn’t realise you had but it’s a great workout.

9. Killinarden Angling Initiative

Does the idea of sitting on a riverbank and spending a day fishing sound good to you? Well, the Killinarden Angling Initiative aims to help anyone with an interest in fishing to learn the sport. Soon, you too could be telling lies about the size of the fish that got away.

10. Lucan BMX Club

Fancy yourself as a budding BMX racer? This is your chance to take to the BMX track and practise your skills on the bike that starred in every single 80s kids’ film. If you watched Stranger Things and focused primarily on the bikes, this could be the club for you.

11. Rebel Ultimate

If you’ve always been a natural at the frisbee, then ultimate frisbee one way to test yourself against the best. Ultimate frisbee clubs can be found in Ireland’s cities or large centres but Rebel Ultimate deserves an honorary mention for having a club crest that couldn’t be more Cork if it tried.

Topaz Cash for Clubs is back this year and they have up to €200,000 to give to clubs across Ireland!

Your club could be in with a chance of winning thousands of Euros just by fuelling up at Topaz. Find our more by registering today on the website. Promotion closes on Sunday 13 August.
