American football, or 'soccer' as the natives call it, has come a long way in the past few years. While it may be a final stop before retirement for many top European players, it's credibility and popularity continues to grow, and more teams, or franchises, are set to be added to MLS in the coming years.
However, it'd be fair to say the defending leaves a lot to be desired. The overwhelming majority of designated players tend to be attacking players, meaning there's not a lot left to spent on the defence.
Last night's MLS Cup final, between Portland Timbers and Columbus Crew exemplified this theory.
After 27 seconds this happened, Columbus' keeper Steve Clark committed a howler:

And just before the hour mark, Columbus got away with murder when trying to clear the ball following a Portland corner.
Portland went on to win the game 2-1 and claim their first MLS title.
