WATCH: Paul Scholes has a pop at the fitness of Manchester United’s current back four

Manchester United defenders will always have a lot expected of them.

The current back four, changeable as it is, had big boots to fill after Gary Neville, Rio Ferdinand, Nemanja Vidic and Patrice Evra ended their Old Trafford career. And United legend Paul Scholes believes that Louis van Gaal's defenders are simply too injury-prone to be spoken of in the same light of those massive names. Speaking to fan channel FullTimeDEVILS, the iconic midfielder said:

"When you come to the end of your time at United, you just have to accept it and there's other people that need to step up to the plate. Have they done that this year? I'm not too sure. "Chris Smalling and Phil Jones have been injured far too often to have a good, consistent run and get the team going. "It's difficult when you can't pick the same back four. "When you look at Evra, Vidic and Ferdinand - they were fit every week and they were easy to pick the back four. "You look now and you just wonder who the back four is going to be. Jonny Evans is injured or suspended and Phil Jones is always injured. Chris Smalling has had a good run actually lately but still he can pick up the odd injury."
