Vine: Steven Defour reacted violently to seeing a banner of his severed head

Standard Liege are one team a former player would probably celebrate scoring against.

Steven Defour returned to his former stomping ground earlier today with new club in the Belgian Pro League and the Liege fans weren't prepared to welcome their former player back. The Liege fans displayed a massive banner, covering most of the stand behind the goal, titled 'Red or Dead', with an image of executioner with Defour's severed head in his hand.

Defour played for the home team between 2006 and 2011, before moving to Porto and then back to Belgium with Anderlecht last summer, and Liege fans are clearly not happy about it. The midfielder's miserable afternoon continued as his side lost 2-0 after he was sent off. Defour lost his cool, after almost an hour of abuse from Liege fans, smashed a ball into the crowd in frustration, hitting a spectator. Defour's sending off caused disturbances in the Anderlecht section, with some fans tossing their seats onto the pitch. Judging by the effect their banner had on Defour, Standard Liege fans may be encouraged to invest in a few more for other former players. [H/T The Guardian]
