While football has seen all sorts of clever innovations down the years, the kick off has remained almost stubbornly formulaic. Okay, the odd time someone will have a cheeky pop at goal but 99.9 per cent of teams will just tap it to a team mate, pass it back and start from there.
However, last night Sampdoria tried something radically different in their game against Lazio. Nine players lined up right on halfway and you can see the sheer confusion it caused their opponents.
In the end, the tactic didn't produce a goal, but it was definitely worth a shot. Sadly for Samp, Lazio won 3-0. Better luck next time Siniša Mihajlović.
