Paul Ince isn't happy about Manchester United of late. But he also isn't happy with this simplistic notion about getting back to the old days.
Football has moved on and Louis van Gaal, whilst he might be guilty of overthinking his tactics, is trying adapt his injury-ravaged team to the modern game. Paul Ince wants to see more intent from his old club but he doesn't accept the idea that they should just play the way Fergie had his teams playing - playing with the like of Paul Ince and with Paul Scholes in the teams.
"When we played it was 4-4-2," Ince dismissed on BT Sport. "We had wingers. It was me against Sav. It was me against Ray Parlour. You won your battles, it was as simple as that. Now, in the modern game, it has changed now. It's 4-3-3, 4-3-2-1, it's changed - there are no wingers.
"To try and get back to the way Manchester United played, ain't going to happen again."
They do have some vital characteristics missing though, according to Incey.
