And this week, the Ajax stopper was back in the wars when, on international duty, he had his nose broken by striker Klaas Jan Huntelaar.
During a training match prior to a friendly against England, Cillessen was rushing out to claim a ball into the box when he got caught by the trailing right foot of Huntelaar.
After writhing around on the grass in pain, Cillessen was helped from the training pitch by the Dutch medical staff and he has since been ruled out of Tuesday's game.
