Trump takes huge step forward in adding new country to World Cup

Where there's a will, there's a way...

If Italy, four-times World Cup winners, weren't already embarrassed enough in failing to qualify for the 2026 World Cup, gaining entry through the back door will surely do it.

As per reports from the Financial Times, geopolitics could get its grubby mitts on football's greatest event as politicians cook up ways to repair relations between the US, Italy and, of course, the Pope.

US special envoy Paolo Zampolli told the outlet: “I confirm I have suggested to Trump and [Fifa president Gianni] Infantino that Italy replace Iran at the World Cup.

"I’m an Italian native and it would be a dream to see the Azzurri at a US-hosted tournament. With four titles, they have the pedigree to justify inclusion."

So far, there has been no response on this request.

Italy have endured a tumultuous record in major international competitions in recent year, not playing in a World Cup since 2014, and not making it to the knockouts since they last won it in 2006.

They will be missing the latest edition after failing to top their qualifying group and subsequently being knocked out by Bosnia and Herzegovina in the playoff.

On the other hand, Iran qualified for sport's biggest event all the way back in March 2025.
