The CIES Football Observatory has found that Newcastle United landed the deal of the January transfer window, reports the BBC. The CIES Football Observatory team of academics estimates transfer values based on 1,500 fee-paying deals involving the big five European leagues since June 2009. It found that the Magpies underpaid Swansea a whopping £11.5 million for Jonjo Shelvey, making him the best value deal of January. However, they also found that Newcastle overspent £5.4 million on Tottenham Hotspur's £12 million winger Andros Townsend. The award for January's most overpriced transfer goes to Guangzhou for shelling out £31 million on Atletico Madrid flop Jackson Martinez. The Chinese club are said to have overpaid a whopping £18.43 million for the Colombian. The study calculates a player's worth based on their statistics in six key areas - age, position, contract, international status, experience and performance. while taking into account the "inflammatory trend" of the market.   Best Deals of the January Transfer Window:
