If anyone can appreciate the vision, intelligence and magnificent technique that Xabi Alonso has, it's his former Liverpool teammate Steven Gerrard.
As a midfield pairing, the duo spent five years playing together at Anfield and during this period they lifted the Champions League, FA Cup, Super Cup and Community Shield. While the majority of Alonso's work might go unnoticed, 'Pool fans will undeniably say that they missed his passing range and ability to control a game following Alonso's move to Real Madrid.
During his career in the famous red jersey, Gerrard played alongside more players in the middle of the park than anyone else, so it's fair to say that Stevie G is better equipped than most to comment on Alonso's talents.
In certain games, it felt like the duo were on a different wavelength to those around them and the former Liverpool captain has paid a glowing tribute to the Spanish midfielder following the news that he's set to retire.
In a message that was posted to Instagram, Gerrard said: "Xavi (sic) you are pure quality. A class act on the pitch and a gentlemen off it . It was a pleasure to play alongside you and I missed you every day from the moment you left the reds . Congratulations on your perfect career and good luck to you and your family in the future."
