Davis, who hasn't yet retired from football and remains the Northern Ireland captain, replaced Michael Beale as Rangers' caretaker manager in recent days. Rangers are currently in third place in the SPL and, after a disappointing start to the season, Davis said earlier this week that he is excited to get to work with the team. The 38-year-old is still on the books as a player at Rangers but hasn't played in months due to a serious knee injury. "I feel very honoured," said Davis. The call came out of the blue, I certainly wasn’t expecting it. I would just like to try and repay the trust the club have shown in putting me in this position.
“I’m delighted to get the opportunity and I’m looking forward to the challenge ahead.
"I believe in the group that we’ve got. Things haven’t gone the way we would have liked and we find ourselves in a situation - but I’m sure with myself and the fans pushing each other in the same direction we’ll go on and get some good results."
Davis' national team manager Michael O'Neill has said that balancing a player/manager role with an international career is impossible.
"You can't do both," said O'Neill.
"you can't be a player/manager at Rangers. I'll chat with him over the international break."
"The days of that type of dual role are long gone and Steven knows it's just not doable."
