Tottenham Hotspur have won the race for Sergio Reguilón for a fee of £27m, after Manchester United refused to entertain the idea of a buy-back clause, according to transfer insider Fabrizio Romano.
United had previously been in pole position to sign the Real Madrid left-back, with a €25m fee reportedly agreed between the two clubs. But the ultimate stumbling block came as Madrid refused to budge on their insistence of inserting a buy back clause while United refused to agree to one.
Tottenham and Reguilón have agreed personal terms 0n a contract running until 2025 and a buy back clause of around €45m.
Reguilón had been keen on the move to Manchester United but once it became clear no agreement would be made between them and Madrid, his representatives accelerated talks with Spurs.
The 23-year-old joins Spurs as a replacement for Danny Rose, who is expected to leave Tottenham after 13 years in the coming weeks. The veteran left-back was not even given a squad number this season.
The arrival of a new left-back will give Spurs more of a threat down that side, where Ben Davies has been playing throughout most of Mourinho's tenure. Spurs' forward line will be thankful for the extra support in attack, with Davies more of a conservative full-back.
Tottenham are also in talks with Real Madrid over the possible return of Gareth Bale, who left north London for Madrid in 2013. Bale has famously fallen completely out of favour with Zinedine Zidane, and will likely not play a single minute this season if he were to stay with the Spanish champions.
No agreement has yet been found, but the possibility of a cost-neutral loan swap, that would see Bale play for Spurs with Madrid paying his wages and Dele Alli heading to the Bernabeu while Tottenham continue to pay his wages, has been floated.
