Here’s a round-up of this weekend’s biggest stories involving Irish players, which we’ll bring you every week.
After the doom and gloom of the international break, there were some stand-out performances from Irish players across the leagues this weekend.
Troy Parrott was back in action for AZ Alkmaar this weekend, and got a crucial goal as they beat Ajax away. Parrott slotted home a 42nd minute penalty to double the lead. The win puts Alkmaar above Ajax in the league. That’s four goals in four games for Parrott in the Eredivisie.
Hearts are in dreamland right now in the SPFL, sitting five points clear at the top of the table. They beat Kilmarnock away on Saturday, with Irish defender Oisin McEntee starting at right-back. He’s been a key player for Hearts this season, who have only conceded six goals so far in the league.
Mikey Johnston has had a habit of scoring screamers since joining West Brom, and he did again this weekend. The winger fired in from 25 yards out to open the scoring against Preston North End. A crucial goal it ended up being as well, as West Brom go 5th in the Championship.
A welcome return to winning ways for Hibs, who came into this game having lost the Edinburgh derby. Jamie McGrath played a key role in the win, slotting home a penalty early in the second half. The result leaves Hibs third in the table, six points off Celtic in second.
Bristol City got their first win in five at the weekend, with thanks to Mark Sykes who scored the only goal of the game. It’s Sykes’ first goal of the season for Robins who are sitting pretty in 7th in the Championship after ten games.
