Some of Liverpool’s biggest fans may have to sign a register at Anfield this season

One of the most daunting and uplifting - depending on your persuasion - sights in football must by the fervent flag-waving on match day at The Spion Kop.

Liverpool's fans are right up their when it comes to passion, pride and fanfare. There is no better place to witness this than in Anfield's famous Kop stand. A large part of that are the flag wavers - little and large. However, for the remainder of the season, the club wants fans to identify themselves and sign a register upon arrival at the ground. There is no official reason as of yet. An Anfield spokesperson commented that the measure may be introduced as staff 'need to know where people are in the stadium'. A host of Reds supporters are peeved. A Spion spokesperson told Liverpool Echo, 'We're more than willing to do what's reasonable. But 48 hours before the West Ham game we got an email saying the procedure was changing, with signing a register and accreditation. 'Would that be some kind of high-visibility jackets? The flags have been a labour of love for us, and historically, worked very well, with the stewards. We're suspicious of an ulterior motive, but want to resolve this.' A Liverpool FC statement reads: 'We are in discussion with the appropriate groups. 'The club remains committed to maintaining the unique atmosphere at Anfield which these flags and banner all contribute to.'
